From his days as a member of the late ’60s Miles Davis Quintet—as Miles entered his electric phase—to leading his own small and large ensembles, Holland’s bold creativity has enhanced the role of the bass in contemporary music as a solo and ensemble instrument. One of his recordings from the early ’70s, Conference of the Birds—featuring Sam Rivers, Anthony Braxton and Barry Altschul—is still considered an important milestone in improvisational music. Currently, Holland’s group features the inventive guitar work of Kevin Eubanks and the innovative drumming of Eric Harland.
